Contrasting Shakespeares Richard with the Historical Figure Essay exam

There are two Richards the Machiavellian monster created by Shakespeare and the historical propose who many historians claim is a much-maligned innocent man. So is Richard the sinner or the one sinned against? How can we decide? Is a decision even possible? In Shakespeares play Richard III, Richard describes himself as a deformed malcontent in the opening soliloquy. (Shakespeare often uses physical deformity to mirror an evil mind.) Analysis of Poe’s The Raven Essay -- Poe Raven Essays

The first two stanzas of The Raven introduce you to the narrator, and his beloved maiden Lenore. You find him sitting on a dreary and dark evening with a book opened in front of him, though he is dozing more than reading. Suddenly, he hears knocking on his doorway, only only believes it to be a visitor nothing more. He remembers another night, like this one, where he had sought the solace of his library to deflect his sorrows of his long lost beloved, and to wait for dawn. Meanwhile the tapping on his door continues. Poes most famous poem begins with an imagery that immediately brings the reader into a dark, cold, and stormy night. Poe does not wish for his readers to stand on the sidelines and watch the goings on, plainly actu solelyy be in the library with the narrator, hearing what he hears and seeing what he sees. Using words and phrases such as midnight dreary and bleak declination Poe sets the mood and tone, by wanting his readers to feel the cold night and to reach for the heat of the dying embers of the fireplace. You do not come into this poem thinking daffodils and sunshine, but howling winds and shadows. By using these words, Poe gives you the sense of being isolated and alone. He also contrasts this isolation, symbolized by the storm and the dark chamber, with the richness of the objects in the library. The furnished mode also reminds him of the beauty of his lost Lenore. Also, Poe uses a rhythm in his beginning stanza, using tapping, followed by rapping, rapping at my door, and ending with tapping at my chamber door. You rat almost hear the tapping on the door of the library as ... ...e opens the door. When he found himself opening the door, he saw nothing but darkness. And this is the point where he figures that there is nothing out there. I think the reason Poe was so afraid, reflects back on Lenore. I understood Lenore to be Poes love at some point in his life. Hes been so depressed, that all he thinks about is her, but then again, he is also trying to forget about her at the same time. And when he first heard the sounds of rustling, he might of thought it could be the spirit of Lenore. I think this was the reason for him to subscribe to been so afraid. Poe drew a lot of his ideas and images into his own imagination. And the images he had of Lenore, was not making him feel any better. I think that most of Poes thoughts and feelings all came from his mind, and not his heart.

The hero of Hannah W. Fosters novel, The Coquette undoubtedly suffers the fate of these afore mentioned opposing ideals. In her inability to confine her tomography to the acceptable definitions of early American female social behavior, Eliza Wharton falls victim to the ambiguity of her societys sentiments of womens roles. Because she attempts to claim the freedom her society superficially advocates, she is condemned as a coquette and suffers the consequences of exercising an independent mind. Yet, Eliza does not st and alone in her position as a pathetic figure. Her lover, Major Sanford -- who is a good deal considered the villain of the novel -- also is constrained by societal expectations and definitions of American men and their ambition. Though Sanford conveys an honest desire to make Eliza his wife, society encourages marriage as a connection in order to advance socially and to secure a fortune. Sanford, in contrast to Eliza, suffers as a result of adhering to social expectations of a males role. While Eliza suffers because she lives her life outside of her social categorization and Sanford falls because he attempts to maneuver and manipulate the system in which he lives, twain are victims of an imperfect, developing, American society. This flaw seems to be a result of the greater defect of the society in which he functions. for sure not an innocent and having his own characterization of the same fatal flaw as Eliza a decisive determination for independence -- Sanford shares in the traditional tragic conclusion of isolation and loss. Despite an attractive interpretation that Eliza Wharton deserves her tragic fate because she is too scandalous of a seductress, her fall is actually a result of her desire for autonomy in a society that denies women that right. Also, to view Sanford as a heartless villain would be reductionary. He too, like Eliza, is subject to the judgements, constraints, and values of a flawed society in which he is separated from his true love. Both characters fall as a result of their desire for relational freedoms that early American society denies them.

Importance of the Journey in James Joyces DublinersIn Ireland the inevitable never happens and the unexpected constantly occurs. Sir John Pentland Mahaffy describes Ireland in a way comparable to James Joyces depiction of Ireland in his book Dubliners. Joyce wrote his book of short stories to show how he viewed Dublin and its inhabitants. Joyce did not have positivistic memories of Dublin and his book casts a negative image upon almost all of Dublin. In Dubliners, James Joyce uses characters and their locomotes through society to give his perception of Dublin. In Joyces stories with journeys there are more hidden elements to the characters and often their original goals are not accomplished. One story where a character goes on a journey through society is in An Encounter. In the story a group of boys hear of a place called the Pigeon House. Two boys decide to skip school and go on a journey for the house that they heard about from their friends. There are many unknowns for the bo ys. The boys have some idea where they are going only if they do not know the path well at all. They say We arranged to go on Wharf Road until we came to the ships, then to cross in the ferryboat and walk out to see the Pigeon House (13). Joyces perception of people planning to go on a journey and not rattling knowing what they are about to experience shows Joyces perception of some people in Dublin. He shows that some in Dublin will go on some aimless journeys with no real sense of direction to gain nothing but experience some sort of adventure. Another unknown element of the journey is the people that the boys come in contact with, specifically an old man that they meet in a field. The old man has an planetary personality and scares the y... ...e that completes what he sets out to do. Only that character dies. It seems that if Michael was the representation of the small successful portion of Dublin, and he dies. This is the first story where one of the prominent characters di es in the story. Michaels death makes the other living characters around him to seem even more inferior. This journey story is different than most others in the book except its ending ties up all the other stories. James Joyce uses individuals and their journey through society to give his perception of Dublin. The journeys that take place in Dubliners have many different aspects but all seem to give the same portrayal of the people of Dublin. From what the characters set out to do to the unknown elements that they experienced and the people that they met along the way, all of Joyces stories give insight to Dublin and its inhabitants.

Curfew Laws: Helpful or Harmful? Essay

Finally, curfews have cost cities a lot of money in increased police costs, money that Miller says c ould be used to fund afterschool programs and other ways to combat juvenile crime more effectively.Miller also says that curfews take away the parents rights, while making them more responsible for their teens behavior. The weaknesses of his article are that he doesnt talk much about the actual effects of curfews on teens in the towns, he just says they are ineffective. He also doesnt look at the law enforcements point of view much. I agree with Miller. Miller makes many more reasonable arguments than does Knight. Knight assumes that all kids are inherently bad, and that the only thing they would be doing on the streets is getting into trouble.While its easy to see how Knight would feel this way he is a cop who deals primarily with teens in trouble it is a false and troubling assumption about teens. Knights statement that all teens lie to their parents and that parents cant control their kids without the laws help is also ridiculous. This supposes no trust or respect between pare nts and kids, and many parents have raised their kids better than this. Miller recognizes that kids are often inherently good, and that those that arent are going to get in trouble just as much (and more) during the day as at night.Research has shown, as Miller states, that it is in the afterschool hours (when parents are still at work and kids are unsupervised) that kids are more likely to get in trouble, if they are going to get in trouble at all. Whats more, Miller is correct in saying that teens want the freedom to make choices if they are to learn to make good ones. Teens are nearly grown up, and if they cant even choose to come home early (or to go to a good evening event, possibly at a friends house or at church), then how are they going to be entirely responsible for themselves in a category or two?Teens should be given more freedom as they grow up, not less. Finally, instead of severe all teens who are out of late at night, cops and the rest of society should worry abou t helping the teens who are in trouble, those who have already been in the system for doing something they shouldnt. These teens need help, they need supervision, they need people to care about them and provide them with alternative activities. In general, money is much better spent on real crime prevention than punishing the innocent.

These exchange rates were being manually updated.One separate Airline Purchasing Department (APD) comprising 50 staff was functional since 1996 to serve the five major user departments and individual spend categories Marketing, Fuel Services, Information Technology, Ground Serv ices and In-flight Services. The APD staff was to identify an appropriate supplier, enter the information onto EMPACS and generate a purchase order that was printed through the IBM mainframe located 20 kilometers away from Cathays head office.
